Last Sunday, I sat at the breakfast table and looked at this Christmas decoration in front of me.
Unless you know its origin, you may wonder what it is?
I come from a mountain range where East Germany and Czech Republic meet and it is referred to as “Ore Mountains”.
Not only did it serve as a supply of uranium for Russia during Cold War times, its silver mining traditions go back centuries.
When 200 years ago mines were closed due to safety issues and the majority lost their employment, many became woodturners.
The Christmas pyramid, the candle arch and this incense smoker figurine all originated in my native “Erzgebirge”.
Looking at this miner in front of me, I wondered whether this strong urge and need to “dig deeper” comes from my ancestors and is in my DNA 🤣?
What I mean by that and how this relates to parenting is that I am never content with receiving information, I need to know the ‘how’ and ‘why’.
My meditation teacher reminds me that the taller a building - the deeper the foundation needs to be dug.
Wanting to advance further into a mine shaft underground, most certainly would make you appreciate the light on coming back out.
While writing this, I am learning that this process of re-emerging needs to be a gradual and a slow one.
Wanting quick fixes and wishing for a perfect day as a parent is not something that can ever be planned but often unfolds after a lot of friction.
Reflecting with my 11-year-old yesterday on the most epic day this year (that taught me so much about “Befriending Uncertainty”), I was surprised to hear how much he enjoyed it.
When it comes to wanting to get it right, giving myself permission to get it wrong has been the most joyful discovery this year.
Growing up only minutes from the Saxon and Bohemian border, it fascinated me that standing on the same peak and looking in one direction:
🇨🇿 people spoke Czech and
🇩🇪 turning right around: others spoke German.
Two different countries and yet ancestors of same origin, is a topic you will definitely hear more about in coming years.
Creating unity and togetherness, I believe starts with parenting our children and is the passion that lights me up.
☕️ Let me know in the comments below what fills your cup and thank you for reading my post.
